Acupuncture is a complete medical protocol focused on correcting imbalances of energy in the body. From its inception in China more than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture has been used traditionally to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as well as to improve general health. The acupuncture technique that has been most often studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metal sterile needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) originated in ancient China and has evolved over thousands of years. TCM practitioners use herbal medicines and various mind and body practices, such as acupuncture, cupping and tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage), to treat or prevent health problems. TCM views a person as an energy system in which body and mind are unified, each influencing and balancing the other. Unlike allopathic medicine which attempts to isolate and separate a disease from a person, TCM emphasizes a holistic approach that treats the whole person.
